NATURE CONSERVATION AT RISK (Slovakia) Category: Loss of Biodiversity

The area around the cottage hamlet of Čierny Potok among the Súľovské Rocks in Slovakia is ranked at the fourth level of protection. Yet, reducing the level of protection to level two is being considered. This would allow for greater and irreversible interventions in the environment.

This endangered area with insufficient environmental protection is not unique in Slovakia. There are other areas at risk, including the Tatra Mountains.

Under the legislation it is only allowable to reduce the level of protection if the subject matter of protection ceases to exist, which has not happened in this case. The Súľovské Rocks are home to many legally protected species, including the Late Spider Orchid [Ophrys holubyana] and the Fly Orchid [Ophrys insectefera L.], which are among the most valuable species of orchids.

FOOTBRIDGES AN (IN)SUSTAINABLE TOURISM? (Portugal) Category: Loss of Biodiversity

On the beach, by the river or in the mountains, there is no shortage of walkways for walking or running. It was in the 1980s that the construction of these structures, usually in wood, began in Portugal. The walkways began as a way of protecting the dunes from trampling and preventing erosion. But in recent years, the footbridges have multiplied, following the growing trend of Nature Tourism. The ease of access has meant that they are now regarded mainly as recreational equipment. But what impacts does the construction and use of footbridges have? How can these be minimised?

Our video, “Digital Pollution”, is related to the Sustainable Development Goal #12, which is “Responsible Consumption and Production”. As our video addresses the issue of digital pollution, while also informing the viewers of its effects, it raises awareness on how to be more responsible when consuming digital media. Additionally, it proposes multiple solutions for this problem of digital pollution and mentions how we can reduce the amount of CO2 emissions as well

“FEARLESS” RESCUER (Slovakia) Category: Loss of Biodiversity

YRE Competition 2022
2nd Place - video reportage

By Hanka Zubová

Every animal has its own important place in nature. If its numbers suddenly dropped, the entire ecosystem could be significantly disrupted. This is also the case with frogs, which are important not only as food for a number of animals, but also because the frogs in turn eat an enormous amount of insects over their lives. If this species were endangered, it would quickly manifest itself in nature. Therefore, even small animals such as these need to be helped. This is especially the case when we build roads through their spring migration routes, which result in the massive deaths of frogs under the wheels of vehicles. Every year, in various places throughout Slovakia, frog rescues are carried out. These animals are carried across the road to nearby ponds or rivers. Young Environmental Reporters also joined such a frog rescue. However, not every reporter was excited about this idea - especially one who doesn't like frogs and doesn't want to catch them. There's nothing left but to steel one's resolve and grit one's teeth. That's what reporter Hanka Zubová did.

Old Companions (Slovakia)

YRE Competition 2021
1st Place - video reportage
11-14 years old

The White Carpathians is a protected mountain range in Slovakia. It is unique not only due to its rock formations and protected butterflies, but also because many old fruit trees were planted here by our ancestors. These are native trees that have been bearing fruit for tens or even hundreds of years. The number of these rare trees is declining every year. People have stopped caring for these trees, respecting them, and even planting trees that do not belong on this land. What should a person living in the White Carpathians do when they decide to plant a new tree in their garden?

Green in blue jeans (France)

YRE Competition 2021
Shared 1st Place - video reportage
19-25 years old

The textile industry is responsible for nearly 10% of global carbon dioxide emissions. Greenhouse gas causing global warming. In France, nearly 700 tonnes of textiles arrive on the market each year, including nearly 90 million jeans. An extremely polluting garment since its design requires 1kg of cotton and 11,000 liters of water. Cotton production, dyeing, sewing ... The stages of its production are so dispersed that a single pair of jeans can travel up to 65,000 km, or one and a half times around the earth. Meeting with inspiring actors who embody solutions to rethink the way you buy your jeans.

Produced by ULIS students from Collège St Vincent in Brest (Finistère in Brittany)

Direction Finister point, where 14 students from 6th to 3rd ULIS of St Vincent college in Brest wondered about the presence, in summer, of green algae on the beaches. Why are there so many ? In order to better understand this phenomenon and find solutions to reduce this nuisance, they interviewed scientists from IFREMER, Annie CHAPELLE and from the CNRS of the Roscoff marine biology station, Gurvan MICHEL.

Selfish and Hotdog (Republic of Korea)

YRE Competition 2020
Shared 1st Place video campaign
15-18 years old

One of the main problems that come as a product of modernity and technological development are the vices of overproduction and overconsumption. Consumers want more products and services than ever before, which increases the need to satiate the materialistic thirst of the masses. The things we own become our identity, and how we shape ourselves in modern societies. The fancy clothes and expensive cars determine your worth. The things we own, end up owning us. In the midst of all this, the profit is quite irresistible for the companies to stop and think about the harm done to the environment in the name of mass production. I thought it would be great to satirically symbolize these vices as a fish named “selfish”, visited by an alien dog who does not understand the destructive tendencies of these perpetrators of such malintentions, hence abducting all of the “selfish” as a solution for a better Earth.

Is there a solution to internet pollution? (Iceland)

YRE Competition 2020
Shared 1st Place video campaign
15-18 years old

The internet has changed the world. The ways we communicate, get information and consume media has drastically changed in a relatively short time. Although people all over the world use the internet on a daily basis, there is a side of the internet that is rarely mentioned and that's the environmental cost of the internet. How do we lower carbon dioxide emission from the internet? While large corporations are doing their best to lower their carbon footprints, there are things that you can do to help. Watch the video to find out more.

One meal, a lot of garbage! (Israel)

Garbage! The more advanced and richer you are, you produce more of it.

Each of us produces an average of 1.7 kg of waste per day.

It's really a lot of garbage!!

So, maybe we should consider how we can reduce it ...

Our video deals with the consumption of products with unnecessary packaging that fill the school bins and in general.

Hope that the message will pass, and people will prefer to consume products without packaging.
